Statement from Torridge Lib Dems on Devon Data Centre proposals
The revelation that the green energy company X-Links is proposing to build a massive AI-optimised data centre on the outskirts of Great Torrington has naturally raised a great many questions and concerns.
The scale of the project is unlike anything seen in Torridge and would bring epoch-making changes to the area and its economy. Whilst many details have still to be provided, the company has stated that it has options on an 800-acre site adjoining the parishes of Huntshaw and Weare Giffard, that capital investment for the scheme is of the order of £12-14 billion, that they are seeking to work with the community to provide benefits such as a skills training centre, green space, and public transport and that between 650 and 1,200 permanent jobs would be created.
As a green energy company, X-Links has stated its intent to develop a centre powered by renewables and that is self-sustaining in water. However, environmental issues are, rightly we believe, among residents’ most pressing concerns. Questions regarding domestic electricity supplies, light pollution, fire safety and public health must be investigated and Lib Dem councillors will be at the forefront of seeking answers to these.
The company is organising four public consultation meetings in mid-July, prior to submitting their planning proposals to Torridge District Council towards the end of the year. We expect much more information to come forward during these processes and encourage residents to respond.
Because of the scale of the project, and its far-reaching potential impacts, both positive and negative, it is not possible at this stage to weigh up the benefits against the extent of any likely harm. In terms of the impact on our rural economy and way of life, there will be those who welcome an investment which positions Torridge so centrally within a rapidly-developing high-tech industry and provides opportunities for our young people to work locally, and others who fear it will destroy much of what makes our area special. We would like to hear people’s views on this.
Lib Dem councillors in Torridge will continue to engage with the process at every step, raising concerns on behalf of residents and updating you as our understanding of the project develops.
